Mark Fallon is an overworked detective investigating a spate of attacks at a string of high profile city centre nightclubs. The not-so-subtle dark tones of this book really grab you and pull you through each page. The story did take a chapter or two to really pick up pace, but even in the first couple chapters the prose keeps you engaged. The closer you got to the end the faster the book moved, the action whisking us away in rapids.Scott struggles in this story, a victim of himself. The drugs are almost an escape for him. We see early on that there's life in him beyond the grind of selling and using. He is by far the best character in a book full of characters dripping with personality.
With that being said, the characters certainly make the story amazing. Twinkle, Angela, Fallon, Jack…all of them really breathe life into an already lively (albeit dark) plot. The best part is that it feels real, like this could happen.

The Elephant Tree is a super fast read, I got through it in little more than an evening as once I started I didn’t want to stop, but for the price, especially the ebook, you’ll be hard pressed to find a better investment for the enjoyment you get back.
Drugs and drug dealing is something that’s prevalent in the news a lot these days, but this book takes the unusual position of telling the story from the point of view of the dealer (but there’s so much more to the book than that). Lots of raw emotions, empathy and understanding with the struggles along Scott’s journey. Yes I had my doubts before I began reading, but I bet no matter how hard-hearted you may feel towards the drug community, you’ll come around and feel yourself rooting for Scott and Angela.
Fast paced, heart pounding, dark and angsty writing that had me turning pages quicker than ever! I loved the themes in this book, it has so many aspects that I can relate to (rightly or wrongly) in my everyday life that it sat comfortably with me. I wanted to hang out with the characters and share a beer with them. It's not, however, what you might expect from reading the cover, so don't let that put you off. The story goes much deeper than a crime-type mystery, and the plot twists and crescendos are well worth it.
Characters were very real, very easy to relate to and become attached to. One thing that surprised me about this novel was the relationship between Scott and Angela, I felt I could relate to this and that so many others who read this could do the same and see themselves in the characters.
I was never bored reading The Elephant Tree and even read it again and found some things I missed the first time round, love when that happens. If you want something that keeps you thinking and makes you want to go back for more then this is a must.
One the surface, "The Elephant Tree" is a whodunit with plenty of action thrown into the mix. But the author, R.D. Ronald, knows his characters so well that I found his descriptions and observations about human behavior providing me with much more than an easy read (though it is that, too). As the reader, I felt like I knew these people, and in fact wanted to know more about them at the end of the novel. Ronald notices things in other people that you or I do not notice, yet ring refreshingly true. A man's face is described as missing something, as if having shaved off a lifelong mustache. A woman is depicted as not beautiful, but she seems to have have a quality you missed at first glance. His is a fragile eye that knows how to share what it sees. A light snowfall is like summer dandelion seeds in the wind. Bloodstains are like berry juice. This is very much a character-driven mystery. Indeed the biggest mystery is how the author knows these fictional characters so well. They stay with you after finishing the book.
is not exactly my genre. I’m not sure how it ended up on my reading list. It was a quick and entertaining read, with well developed characters and an engaging plot. If there was a sequel, I might pick it up, just to find out how certain elements turn out.

The intriguing novel takes place in the middle of a realm of criminals and drug dealers. The Elephant Tree is not your typical thriller and Ronald did a fantastic job creating even more intrigue and excitement with all the twists and turns in the plot which make it very difficult to put this book down. The Elephant Tree is definitely a page turner. I felt that the characters were very well written and fleshed out to the point that it felt as though you personally know them. This novel is a provocative clandestine delight to immerse yourself in. This novel is definitely a must read!
Weak character development, slow plot, disjointed and slightly poor writing. There really was no plot until the half way mark and by then I was in a hurry to finish and move on to the next book on my list. I really didn't enjoy this one at all.
